What is a standard metric?

What your KPI measures, said the same way everywhere.

Written by Margaux Reynaud

Available on request: the standard metric is activated only where it fits your contract. Contact your Customer Success Manager to enable it for your organization or specific sites.

What it is

A standard metric says what a KPI measures. It comes from a list covering the industrial performance metrics plants track in their daily management, including the relevant entries of the ISO 22400 standard: 100 metrics across 12 groups (safety, environment, people, operational excellence, inventory and supply chain, maintenance, productivity, quality, delivery, customer, cost, business and finance).

It is information added on top of your KPI, independent from how the KPI was configured. It changes nothing in how the KPI works: same data points, same targets, same chart, same calculation.

Standard metric and category are two different things. Your categories are your own: you define them, and they apply across Fabriq objects and boards, tickets and routines included. The standard metric comes from the standardized list maintained by Fabriq, it is the same for every customer, and it applies to KPIs only. A KPI in your Quality category can carry the standard metric "Scrap ratio", another one "First pass yield".

What it is for

Each KPI's name is set by the user that creates it, so the same measure can be called differently from one team to the next. The standard metric is what they still have in common. It lets you:

  • find KPIs by what they measure, without knowing their name or ID

  • bring together every KPI that measures the same thing, across all teams of the site, in one filtered list

  • see how a strategic measure cascades down to the teams and their tiers, by filtering on its standard metric in the site KPI view

The standard metric says what a KPI measures, not how it is calculated.

Where you see it

  • On the KPI, in the Settings tab

  • When you create a KPI, Fabriq suggests a metric if it finds a match. You can keep it or select another one

  • In the KPI views, team and site: as a column, as a filter, and in the exports

It is filled automatically

Your existing KPIs already have a standard metric: Fabriq assigns it automatically, so nobody has to go through thousands of KPIs by hand.

When you create a KPI, you pick the metric yourself.

Assignments that look wrong? Tell us through the chat: Contact us > Send a message > Suggest an improvement. Your feedback is what we use to improve how KPIs are mapped.

An automatic assignment can be corrected at any time, and once someone has chosen a metric, the automation never overwrites that choice.

Like any other KPI setting, changing it is reserved to team admins, see Update, archive or delete a KPI.

To change it: open the KPI, Settings tab, click on the standard metric, then select another metric.

💡 Finding the right metric. Whether you are creating a KPI or correcting its metric, you do not have to scroll through the whole list. Search accepts the metric name, its acronym and its synonyms, so "FPY" finds First pass yield. You can also narrow the list to a single group, maintenance or quality for example.

Not sure what a metric covers? Its definition appears on hover, both on the standard metric shown in the KPI settings and while picking one from the list.

If no metric fits

The list is maintained by Fabriq and is the same for everyone: it is a shared industrial reference, not a taxonomy each customer configures. So you cannot add your own metric. The list is not frozen though: we keep refining it, and what you report is what tells us where it falls short of your practices.

When nothing matches, click I can't find the right metric and tell us why:

  • Nothing in the list came close

  • I found similar ones, but none matched exactly

  • The KPI is specific or custom to us

Then give us as many details as you can: what the KPI measures, how it is built, the wording your teams use for it. The more precise you are, the better we understand what is missing or off in the list, and the faster we can fix it.

The KPI's standard metric is then saved as Other. You can change it later, for example once a matching metric has been added.
